Audi reveals the 2014 RS6 Avant

Supercar performance, estate practicality. Perfect...

This morning, our inbox was full of ‘scoops’ showing leaked images of the new Audi RS6 Avant. Well clearly Audi wasn’t having any of it as before we could even write the story, they had sent out the full press release – and what a car it is. The 2014 RS6 Avant does tip its hat to the modern trend of downsizing, but that certainly doesn’t mean it has lost any of the legendary punch it is renowned for.

Out goes the Lamborghini-derived 5.0 V10 of the previous model, which is replaced with the twin turbo 4.0 litre V8 engine seen in the S6, S7 and S8 models. But in this application the wick is turned up even more to 552 bhp, with the added bonus of 516 lb/ft of torque. This power figure is actually 28 bhp down on the previous model, but as this new RS6 uses the new VAG Group’s MQB platform the car weighs around 100 kg less, meaning performance goes up while economy is massively improved.

0 – 62 mph comes up in 3.9 seconds, making the 2014 RS6 the first to drop below the 4 second mark. Top speed is normally restricted to 155 mph, however an optional Dynamic Package raises that to 174 mph, while the next-level Dynamic Package Plus allows 190 mph. Not bad for an estate car that can comfortably accommodate 5 adults and their luggage.

You don’t buy a 552 bhp car for its economy, but buyers will be pleased to find that economy is improved to around 29 mpg while emissions sit at 229 g/km of CO2. This is attributed to the lower weight, new 8-speed automatic gearbox and ‘cylinder on demand’ technology that can shut down four of the eight cylinders when not under load.

Visually the new RS6 is the best looking new Audi we’ve seen in years. Up front there is a new bumper with large air intakes at the sides and a matte aluminium-rimmed grille which features a split lower section for the first time. This gives a smaller grille opening at the bottom, with a 3D ‘quattro’ logo sitting in it. We think it looks great, and hope they use it more.

Huge 20- or 21-inch alloy wheels hide large 390 mm front discs (or optional 420 mm carbon ceramic discs), while the wheelarches are flared front and rear to accommodate  the wider track. At the rear there is a new carbon diffuser, flanked by the now-standard Audi RS oval tailpipes.

Handling should be much improved over the previous model thanks to the lighter weight, and the fact that the V8 is around 500 mm shorter than the V10, meaning weight distribution is much improved.

Prices are likely to start at £77,000 when the RS6 Avant goes on sale in July, but with all the dynamic options ticked this could rise to £90,000 very easily.
